Celeste Malvar-Stewart, the designer of Columbus, Ohio based MALVAR=STEWART creates “non-seasonal lines of women’s clothing,” using salvaged fabrics and local natural dyes that do not follow the standard fashion concept of “this season’s color palette.” They also focus on unconventional design that is thoughtful towards the environment at every stage of the garment’s life cycle, without compromising beauty, quality, and integrity that by nature is one-off.
As original as Malvar-Stewart’s collection is, Fresh Cut TEXTILES led by founder/natural dyer Amanda Cinco-Hoyt. FcT is an independent natural dye studio located in Detroit, created by Cinco-Hoyt and fully inspired by color, texture, exploration and nature specializes in small batch, 100% naturally dyed textiles, as each season offers.
Cinco-Hoyt and Malvar-Stewart, recently channeled their fashion and natural dyeing prowess to create the line- M=S + fcT and promoted the collaboration with a fashion show.
MALVAR=STEWART’s BLUEPRINT Collection was created using hand felted local wool and silk, and dyed using Botanical Colors’ Indigo and hand printed by fresh cut TEXTILES using images of blueprints of a 1918 Luder’s Hull Wooden Tugboat created with water-based ink.
The collaborative line M=S + fcT’s TESSELATION Collection was created with individually hand felted local wool & silk panels, creating zero waste & dyed using variations of traditional shibori techniques and again, with indigo from Botanical Colors.
Fresh cut TEXTILES is also soon to collaborate with a local urban farm in Detroit to create their first cultivated dye garden including weld, Japanese Indigo and madder, amongst about 15 other dye plants.
“We are just excited to get the awareness of natural dyes present here in Detroit!” says Cinco-Hoyt.
