Cutch (Acacia catechu) is the rich reddish brown color seen in Indian textiles. It is both a dyestuff and tanning agent and has been used in India since ancient times.

Aquarelle cutch liquid is an easy to use liquid natural dye that creates a soft brown. Alum mordants tend to turn cutch yellow. So if you are seeking a deep chocolate shade, mordant with iron. Each Aquarelle liquid natural dye is pre-extracted from a leaf, root, bark or other natural source. They combine easily and produce beautiful shades. Thicken with print paste thickener. After that, use for printing, painting and other surface design applications.

Liquid Dye Color Combinations

  • Saxon Blue with cutch creates a sea green
  • Madder with cutch creates a beautiful burnished burgundy red
  • Cutch with a pinch of soda ash will make a reddish russet

To calculate the amount of dye you want to use, you will first find out the weight of the material you want to dye. This is known as the Weight of Fiber (WOF). Weigh your textiles when they are dry to get the WOF. The amount of dye that you need is then calculated as a percentage of the WOF.

For example, an average large cotton t-shirt weighs approximately 150g. To dye it a dark brown shade with liquid cutch, you could use 20% of the weight of the shirt (30g) of liquid cutch.
