Description

The School of Making Patterns are an exciting way to learn hands on how to make Alabama Chanin garments. Choose from one of the patterns below and create a garment made by your own two hands and inspired by the design team at Alabama Chanin.

Corset

One of our most popular patterns, The Corset is feminine and flattering with a snug fit and low scoop neckline to enhance your natural curves. The pattern comes in sizes XS to XXL along with instructions for fabric selection, cutting, and garment construction. See chart below for yardage requirements. This pattern is designed for use with The School of Making™ Studio Book Series as a reference for detailed sewing instruction. Choose between a physical folded paper pattern or digital download pattern. For a physical copy, you will receive a 9″ x 12″ envelope with a folded paper pattern—printed to scale—and printed instructions on 8.5″ x 11″ paper.

 

Maggie Dress

Part of our original 2016 Build a Wardrobe programming, our Maggie Dress pattern includes three length variations for the garment body: top, tunic, and dress. The Maggie Dress features a high, crew neckline and is fitted across the bust. There are two back panels that wrap around and tie at the front, just under the bust, and two front panels that snap at the inside back. Binding encases all edges of this garment. Pattern comes in sizes XS to XXL along with instructions for fabric selection, cutting, and garment construction. This pattern is designed for use with The School of Making™ Studio Book Series as a reference for detailed sewing instruction. For a physical copy, you will receive a 9″ x 12″ envelope with a folded paper pattern—printed to scale—and printed instructions on 8.5″ x 11″ paper.

 

Car Coat

Part of our 2017 Build a Wardrobe programming the pattern includes 3 length variations for the garment body (cropped jacket, jacket, and coat) plus 2 sleeve options and 3 pocket options. Pattern comes in sizes XS to XXL along with instructions for fabric selection, cutting, and garment construction. This pattern is designed for use with The School of Making™ Studio Book Series as a reference for detailed sewing instruction. For a physical copy, you will receive a 9″ x 12″ envelope with a folded paper pattern—printed to scale—and printed instructions on 8.5″ x 11″ paper.

 

Swing Skirt

The Swing Skirt pattern includes the nested pattern and comes in sizes XS to XXL with six length variations—21″, 24″, 26″, 28″, 33″, and 40″—and four pocket variations—cargo, patch, five-side patch, and side-seam. The pattern includes instructions for fabric selection, cutting, and garment construction. Choose between a downloadable PDF or a printed pattern. This pattern is designed for use with The School of Making™ Studio Book Series as a reference for detailed sewing instruction.  Use this pattern along with “The Swing Skirt Techniques & Construction” video course available through Craftsy. For a physical copy, you will receive a 9″ x 12″ envelope with a folded paper pattern—printed to scale—and printed instructions on 8.5″ x 11″ paper.

 

Drawstring Pant

Part of our 2017 Build a Wardrobe programming, the Drawstring Pant pattern includes 4 length variations (shorts, knee-length shorts, cropped, and long), 3 skirt options (short, mid-length, and long), and pocket variations. This pattern features a drawstring waistline, relaxed style, and four pocket variations. They are fitted at the waist with a loose fit to the hem. Pattern comes in sizes XS to XXL along with instructions for fabric selection, cutting, and garment construction. This pattern is designed for use with our The School of Making™ Studio Book Series as a reference for detailed sewing instruction. For a physical copy, you will receive a 9″ x 12″ envelope with a folded paper pattern—printed to scale—and printed instructions on 8.5″ x 11″ paper.

About Natalie and Alabama Chanin:

With a background in environmental and industrial design, Natalie has worked for 20 years building sustainable practices and community values into the design and making process through her business. You can follow along with the storytelling behind all of this on the Alabama Chanin Journal and on Instagram.

Natalie has long been a pioneer in the Slow Fashion movement and teaches these fundamentals to thousands of people each year through sewing workshops and online classes. She has authored five books on sewing and craft. Natalie is a member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America and a recipient of multiple awards and grants for fashion and the arts—including the 2013 CFDA/Lexus Eco-Challenge—an award competition that identifies and celebrates the greatest American designers working in the realm of sustainable fashion.
