Beam Paints Indigenous-Made Watercolor Travel Cards

Beam Paints Indigenous-Made Watercolor Travel Cards

We are excited to offer a range of Beam Paints Indigenous-Made Watercolor Travel Cards on Manitoulin Island in Canada. Beam Paints is located in M’Chigeeng First Nation on Manitoulin Island/Mnidoo Mnising. Beam Paints watercolors are for use on paper and are not textile dyes. But their products are a wonderful intersection of colors derived from high quality pigments and ingredients. Anong Beam has been very thoughtful about the pigments she uses and has rigorously tested her paints for lightfastness and safety. I think you will find her palettes beautiful and inspiring.

Beam Paints are made from lightfast pigments, tree sap, gum arabic, and Manitoulin honey, blended together to create a handmade saturated colour that is a joy to paint with. From thick stripes to fine washes and details, quality is evident in every stroke. Their watercolours are shaped into paintstones, their version of a half-pan, before being wrapped in beeswaxed canvas. Their pans are packaged in slices of cedar and birch offcuts from an Indigenous sustainable lumber operation.

The Beam product line includes these ingenious Travel Cards, which are specialized palettes consisting of dollops of watercolor on a sturdy handmade paper called dot cards. Lightweight and easy to carry, Travel Cards are perfect when you want to set out with a few creative tools but don’t want to be weighed down. Just add water, some paper and a brush and you are all set!

Anong Beam from Beam Paints writes

Beam Paints is the result of a multi-generational love of pigment, paint, colour, and innovation. I was raised by my artist parents, Carl Beam and Ann Beam, and was taught from a young age how to harvest hematite pigment in the LaCloche mountain range near our home in M’Chigeeng First Nation on Manitoulin Island. Beam Paints draws on my early educations in Indigenous pigment and expands it to encompass all paint traditions. A focus on high quality pigment content creates sublime artist materials, with plastic-free packaging.
