Okanogan Madder Seeds
We are now carrying organic Rubia tinctorum madder seeds from Washington State.(Okanogan Madder Seeds) These are what you need in order to start your own madder patch for years of harvest and making red color. Madder is the oldest red dye, found on Egyptian burial textiles and fragments from the Indus Valley around 3000 BCE.
Madder is a perennial and grows well in most soils. It will crawl its way into other parts of the garden, so grow it in a separate container or bed to control sprawl. The roots take between 2 and 3 years to grow large enough for harvest in late summer/fall. Use fresh or dry for coral pink to dark Burgundy shades. The longer you leave it in the ground, the deeper the color.
Ecotone Threads has a detailed blog post about setting up a madder bed for harvest over a number of years. It’s a recommended read for keeping your madder bed healthy and productive for many years of beautiful color.
Our supplier says:
We wet process (ferment) the madder seeds to get rid of the berry part, so the germination is much better than with other madder seeds. They also store much better this way.
