Description

The fabric is 46.5 inches wide and is sold by the yard (36 inches).

Sally Fox worked with Taishobo in Japan to make this super fine Sea Island Cotton Lawn fabric for fine shirts and dresses and we are thrilled to offer it. We really love how this fabric is the product of years of selected breeding, beautiful, organic fiber and excellent manufacturing.

Sea Island cotton boasts one of the longest staple lengths of any cotton in the world, yielding a silky and very soft hand. It is an exceptionally rare luxury cotton as only a tiny amount is cultivated by specialized growers. This Sea Island varietal from Monserrat was bred in the 1980s by Dr. Carl Roberts and adapted for desert cultivation. This was no small feat as the original variety flourished in moist tropical heat and Dr. Roberts selected for seed that would thrive in low water and desert conditions. The breeding program spanned two decades and it is now grown in New Mexico by Alvarez Farms and then milled and spun in Japan by Taishobo, a premium mill that Sally has used for over 20 years.

The resulting fabric is a superfine 4 ounce lawn with a tightly woven and balanced plain weave. Weight per linear yard is approximately 5.2 ounces. This fabric would make a lovely blouse. Wash fabric before cutting for sewing and scour fabric prior to dyeing.
