Description

Wool gauze fabric is a versatile base for natural dye experiments and basically our favorite protein (animal) fiber to use when testing. We’ve used this fabric for Sasha Duerr’s Plant Tones workshop as well as Porfirio Gutierrez’ workshop: Cochineal the Zapotec Way. This wool gauze fabric is very soft and sheer and perfect for lightweight warmth and it takes  natural dyes beautifully.  It is approximately 58 inches wide and the fiber content is 100% fine sheep’s wool. The fabric is commercially woven using a rapier-style loom, which leaves a short fringe on the selvedge edges.  For us, this is a great decorative element and the raw edges can be fringed and stitched, making a 4-edged fringe, perfect for a throw or wrap.

Sold in one yard (36 inches or .91 meter) increments. If you buy more than one yard, it will come as one continuous piece!

The weight per square yard is approximately 2.5 ounces and it is a warm cream color. The weight per linear yard is approximately 4.2 ounces or 120 grams. The fabric is light enough to not require scouring.

From our Feedback Friday series:

How does one dye wool in indigo? If you can’t what dyes could I use to get blues and greens?

Wool is easily dyed in an indigo vat using the 1-2-3 recipe.  It’s best to keep wool yarn and fabric off the bottom of the vat as the sediment gets lodged in the wool fibers.  A plastic colander or deep strainer placed in the vat helps keep the fibers from touching the sediment.  Using Hide Glue and a slightly lower pH help wool stay soft after a dip in the indigo vat. It also helps to use a splash of white vinegar (1/4th cup or 60ml) and soak the wool fiber in a cold water vinegar bath to neutralize the strong alkalinity of the vat and get rid of excess calcium hydroxide. You will be rewarded with a lustrous and rich blue shade!

For green:

The usual way to obtain green is to overdye yellow over indigo, or indigo over a yellow-dyed fiber. You can also add iron to a yellow dye on a white yarn and get an olive shade.
