Workshop dates: May 31, June 1 and 2, 2024  (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) 9:00 AM Pacific-12:00PM, 12:00-3:00PM Eastern, 18:00-21:00 UTC

This workshop will be recorded and available for viewing for 90 days afterward.

Workshop description: Join Aboubakar to create a mud-dyed journey pouch that you decorate and stitch from traditional materials. The workshop will focus on traditional Malian mud as the medium and your own creativity as the path to working with this amazing substance.  We will provide traditional strip fabric (finimugu) for embellishment. After that, we use the magic of tannin and mud to create our designs.  Aboubakar will guide you through the construction of an elegantly simple pouch embellished with a sturdy cord. The pouch is approximately 9×12″ and is the perfect size for holding  everyday essentials.

This is an online class and we will ship materials to you and provide you with a Zoom videoconferencing link. The class hours are 9AM-12PM (Pacific). The class will practice on traditional Malian strip cloth (finimugu) using special mud paste that Aboubakar gathered, sifted and is traditionally fermented for months. Shipping within the United States is FREE with standard shipping for international participants.

The workshop includes

  • Three days intensive online study with Aboubakar on mineral mud-dyeing
  • All sampling materials and mud and dyes from Mali including finimugu handwoven cotton fabric and fermented mud paste, myrobalan tannin, a sample of n’galama (traditional leaf) tannin and a paintbrush.
  • Aboubakar will present videos and stories of his mud-gathering feats
  • 90 days access of the workshop recording for the participant
  • A moderator/TA will accompany each Botanical Colors Zoom class
  • Classes are taught in English.
  • Free shipping within the US and standard shipping for international locations.  Please register by May 12 for materials to arrive on time.  This workshop is open to international locations.
Materials that you supply
  • A dye pot and burner to make tannin. The pot should be approximately 4-5 quarts (4-5 liters). You can also use a teakettle or hot pot to make hot water.
  • A container to hold the tannin liquid – approximately 1-2 gallon size or 4-8 liters.
  • Inexpensive paint brushes. Do not use your high quality brushes as they will be ruined.
  • A covering for your work area like plastic sheeting or oilcloth.
  • An area to dry your work (drying rack, outdoor clothesline)
  • An area to rub off the dried mud into a container (such as a small shoebox sized tub) to save and reuse this precious substance.
  • A rinse tub to wash the textile.

Purchase of a workshop and video viewing is for a single participant only. We ask that you respect the artist and not share or distribute his information, images or techniques.
