4-Day Indigo Master Class
Spend four days working with Aboubakar Fofana to refine your technique and deepen your understanding of indigo in this intensive class taught by an internationally recognized indigo master.
Over the duration of the workshop, participants will be shown how to prepare powdered indigo and how to set up the dye vat, then dye a set of samples, and work on a larger project with Aboubakar’s assistance. It is assumed that you have working experience with indigo and the introductory steps covered in the first indigo workshop will be reviewed but the focus of the class is indigo practice including proper vat preparation, dealing with challenges, and finishing the cloth.
The workshop is open to those who have prior indigo experience working with natural indigo and will be limited in size so students can work deeply with this particular vat. We will provide a generous array of sample fabrics for dipping. Multiple vats of different strengths will be available for ample time to dip and practice. Students will be asked to bring a small selection of fabric for their final project and yardage will also be available for sale at the workshop.
Please note that previously dyed items and garment dyeing are not suitable for this workshop. Please contact us with questions about bringing resisted or bound pieces.
The workshop will be held outdoors under a covered canopy in the glorious Seattle summertime. There is plenty of room to spread out and it is conveniently across the street from Botanical Colors’ studio in a quiet neighborhood setting. Due to the intensive study, we thought it might help to have a few nice refreshments and beverages on hand, and there are nearby restaurants, cafes and a natural foods market that has a large gluten-free and organic food selection.
We will also have a pop-up featuring Aboubakar’s textiles and treasures from his atelier for sale.
The workshop includes
