Construction Techniques with Aboubakar Fofana
This is the first time we are offering Construction Techniques with Aboubakar Fofana in the US. It is an offshoot of our conversations last year about learning some of the different stitching and finishing techniques. For instance, working with approximately 8 meters of Malian strip cloth. Participants will learn how to join the strip fabric to make a panel of 4 strips. After that, they will learn binding techniques for shibori. Or participants will paint the panels with mineral mud or dip in indigo (or both).
Above all, Aboubakar will teach his methods for embellishing the piece. Options are tassels, edgings and other beautiful handwork finishes. In other words, this is a rare opportunity for an in-depth exploration using traditional finimugu (cotton strip cloth). Similarly, combining mud and indigo. The workshop will be held outdoors under a covered canopy in the glorious Seattle summertime. So there is plenty of room to spread out. In addition, it is conveniently across the street from Botanical Colors’ studio in a quiet neighborhood setting. We will serve light refreshments. Similarly, there are numerous nearby restaurants, cafes and a natural foods market that has a large gluten-free and organic food selection.
We will also have a pop-up featuring Aboubakar’s textiles and treasures from his atelier for sale.
The workshop includes
- Five days intensive study with Aboubakar on indigo dyeing: July 30 through August 4, 2020
- Small class format (12 students)
- All sampling materials provided
- Aboubakar will present videos on his work, his indigo atelier and indigo farm in Mali.
