Join us for our first, in person, Seattle workshop on Wednesday, August 25th and Thursday, August 26th for Natural Dye Color Gradations with Kathy Hattori! We will be learning how to combine a variety of natural dyes to shift color on natural fabrics. Participants will work in teams and mix and dye fabric swatches that incrementally change creating a beautiful color gradation. This technique allows for unusual color combinations that creates distinctive yet harmonious shades and is the ideal workshop for those who wish to explore more about natural dyes and create palettes and harmonious color sequences. Selective indigo dipping will add a surprising color element. Each team will dye swatches in their color combinations for the entire class, resulting in a total number of 35-50 swatches with recipes (the total number of swatches depends on the number of teams and our collective energy level).
Note: the photographs show a natural dye gradation study that tapestry artist Joyce Hayes completed using fine silk threads. She dyed nearly 100 colors using the gradation method to create movement and depth in her beautiful small format tapestries.
The Natural Dye Color Gradations workshop runs from 9-4pm each day with a one hour lunch break. Each participant will receive a complete set of fabric swatches, recipes and notes on creating your own gradations and color explorations. The workshop is within walking distance of several takeout restaurants and cafes.
We will be holding the workshop outdoors under pop-up tents at a private Airbnb in Seattle. There is plenty of room for people to spread out, even working with a teammate. We will follow the current health and Covid safety protocols. We are requesting that everyone who attends be vaccinated against Covid-19. You are welcome to wear a mask during the workshop and we will have surgical masks available along with disinfectant wipes for cleaning surfaces. We will provide more information as we get closer to the workshop date. Please note that the Airbnb has multiple stairs and a sloped yard. If you have mobility questions, please contact us prior to registration so we may best advise you.
The price for the workshop is $350 per person. We will send out a short materials list of items to bring after registration.
