The Beginner’s Dye Kit
Discovering the world of natural dyes for the first time is one of those seismic psychic shifts where suddenly everything is a potential dyestuff. That red that came from your farmer’s market amaranth flowers, the seed from your avocado toast that friends say “gives the most amazing dusty rose”, the flowers dropping onto the streets and sidewalks leaving stains of red, purple and yellow…the possibilities are endless. Your mind is zinging and you wonder if that color could change the color of your clothing, but how to begin experimenting?
The Beginner’s Dye Kit is a curated collection of color that allows you to experiment with a range of beautiful plant-based hues. We like to think about it as a snapshot of those organic beets and flower-stained sidewalks into a kit that’s much less fleeting in color permanence. Start simply and push yourself (if you even want to), into trying out more complex color blends, resist techniques and (gulp) making black! Our careful instructions will ensure a successful launch of your new wardrobe with tried and true techniques and suggestions.
Our kit comes with generous sizes of our most popular dyes, including extracts of madder, and fustic, logwood liquid, one of our selection of dried dye flowers, and ground oak galls. This palette of shades allows you to experiment across a range of dyes and techniques. We include a full-sized package of our versatile and most popular cold water mordant, aluminum triformate, and non-toxic auxiliaries for color shifting and blooming. Our updated kit includes 5 cotton bandanas (22×22″) so you can get started right away. The kit holds enough ingredients to transform a half dozen t-shirts, some silk scarves or cotton bandannas, a lightweight cotton sundress and a few pairs of socks. In all, the kit contains enough dye ingredients for nearly 8 lbs of clothing. Of course, your results may vary.
