Did you miss Kathy’s The Henna Indigo Vat with S Did you miss Kathy’s The Henna Indigo Vat with Shibori Techniques workshop? Don’t worry!

The recording is now available!

Indigo is the fabled blue of legend, history and culture and has fascinated artists and scholars for centuries. Indigo is the most popular dye that we carry and there are different ways to make an indigo vat for dipping. One of our favorites is the 1-2-3 Henna vat, where henna, this unique natural dye and body tattoo (mehndi) paint plays an integral part of an indigo vat, yielding beautiful results.

Join Kathy as she instructs you how to create the henna vat in a 5-gallon bucket.  We also cover the differences between the henna, fructose and iron vats. I’ll review five simple shibori techniques that will allow you to create beautiful patterned fabric, and hints and tips on getting clear shibori patterns. Kathy will demonstrate the secrets to deep color, how to balance the vat, scaling up to larger vats and how to revive a vat and close the vat for storage.

You will leave this class with a clear understanding of how to build a henna vat, dip, create shibori patterns, put the vat to bed and store it.

You will have video access until January 1, 2026

Sunday Visit: Victoria Manganiello of Craftwork. T Sunday Visit: Victoria Manganiello of Craftwork. The Intersection of Technology & Craft. @Victoriamanganiello @craftwork_collective.

In this edition of Botanical Colors’ Sunday Visit series, we sit down with Victoria Manganiello, the innovative textile artist and co-founder of Craftwork with Nicole Yi Messer - @messinicole, whose work blurs the boundaries between ancient weaving traditions and cutting-edge technology. From her early days experimenting with knitting and macramé to her current projects that fuse natural dyes, fiber optics, and computer programming, Manganiello’s practice is a testament to the power of collaboration, curiosity, and storytelling. Join us as we delve into her journey—exploring how she weaves together history, materiality, and digital code to create textiles that are as poetic as they are thought-provoking.

Online Workshop: Chromatic Transformations: Natura Online Workshop: Chromatic Transformations: Natural Dye Chemistry and pH-Responsive Color Shifting on Cotton & Silk – August 9th, 2025.

This course will be recorded and sent out if you can’t attend live.

Instructor: @caramariepiazza Piazza
August 9th

Online Via Zoom : You will receive a PDF with the zoom link after purchase. Once the date nears closer to August, Cara will send the class curriculum and PDF.

This workshop will be recorded and available for online viewing until March 15, 2026.

Originally Cara’s workshop on creating cosmic night sky patterns,  Cara has now modified this workshop to include an entire range of tannin bases, along with other dyes that are susceptible to being modified with simple kitchen chemistry. A great addition to Twilight Tannins, you will build and create swatches on both Cotton & Silk in this workshop. Cara will guide you through methodical approaches to dyeing and how simple changes in pH can create captivating, shifting colors on fabric.

What This Workshop Is About:

Natural dyes have a unique magic, terroir and alchemical properties. Many of them change color depending on their chemical environment. In this class, you’ll learn how to work with these dyes in a thoughtful, hands-on way, experimenting with acids and alkalis to shift colors and create beautiful, otherworldly surface designs inspired by our galaxy. Think IO - Jupiters moon. @galaxies.
