We are so thrilled to have you join us for a textile adventure in Bali and Sumba, Indonesia!  We are offering three travel options for this tour.  First is a combined Bali and Sumba tour that runs from May 14-May 31, 2026.  We are also offering a Bali only immersion that runs from May 14-May 26.  And finally, we are opening up the coveted Sumba adventure that runs from May 25-May 31.  One of these options is sure to be an amazing experience!

Pricing information

Bali only – Starting at $6800 for double occupancy, $7200 for single occupancy

Sumba – Starting at $5400 for double occupancy, $5700 for single occupancy

Bali and Sumba – Starting at $11200 for double occupancy, $11900 for single occupancy.  Note that the Bali-Sumba combination includes a $1000 discount from purchasing the two tours separately.

Tour highlights for Bali

  • 13 days on the island of Bali including hotel, transportation to scheduled events
  • All breakfasts, some dinners and lunches during our workshop session
  • 6 days natural dye workshop at the fully equipped Threads of Life studio
  • Learn Batik using traditional tools and stamps
  • Work with indigenous dye plants
  • Make indigo pigment from plants and create a 600 liter (approximately 150 gallon) indigo vat
  • Barkcloth (indigenous textile from the island of Sulawesi) workshop
  • Cultural presentations in myth and dance
  • Travel to east Bali to meet weavers, visit villages and learn from tradition keepers
  • Airport transfer to and from airport

  • 6 days on the island of Sumba, including hotel and transportation to scheduled events
  • Round trip air from Bali DPS airport to Sumba
  • All meals
  • Travel and hands on workshops
  • Visit ikat center that supports traditional Sumba ikat (regarded as among the finest of the ikat techniques)
  • Visit Morinda plantation to view sustainable Morinda production
  • Learn the time-consuming red dye process using Morinda
  • Visit to a traditional Sumba village, learning about Marapu religion, culture and customs from Rindi elders. This is a rare opportunity as Threads of Life are dear friends of this community.
  • Learn about traditional basket making with lontar palm leaves
  • Visit indigo plantation and learn indigo paste making
  • View ikat weaving and the ikat process
  • Learn mud dyeing
  • View supplementary warp weaving
