In this workshop we will discover how eco-printing can transcend into the fields of painting, drawing, and collage with the addition of two different methods: the single plane paper image, and the stencil mirror-printed image. We will begin by covering the basics of scouring and mordanting, how to press and store plant matter for projects, and how to make paper patterns for eco-printing. Then we will delve into the limitless world of pictorial based printing by learning how to create a design using appliqué for a paper pattern, and how to accurately lay pressed foliage and botanicals to achieve your desired results. This class will also cover additional information like steam times, how to scale projects up, and how to equip yourself with everything you need for pictorial printing.

Sydni developed what she calls The Eco-printed Image, a pictorial printing method that expands the field of eco-printing into drawing, painting, and collage. The process includes two approaches, the Stencil Mirror Printed Image and the Single Plane Paper Image, both centered on the idea that plant material can produce more than the standalone print of a leaf or flower.

About Sydni

Sydni Gause (she/her) is a natural dyer and fiber artist based in Panama City, Florida. She earned her MFA in Sculpture and Dimensional Studies from Alfred University in 2018, where her interest in natural color began to shape the direction of her work. Drawn to the ways plant-based color could inform a sculptural practice, she followed this curiosity into a medium that became both a creative focus and a way of living. Working in a warm climate allows her to cultivate dye plants year round. This steady growing cycle has become central to her process, grounding her practice in environmental ethics and in the rhythms of the landscape she lives with. The garden has also shown her how communal this work can be; her daughter gathers flowers, her grandmother starts seeds, her husband tends the plants, and her mother sends pressed leaves from her garden in Tennessee. The act of making has become shared, and that care remains one of the most meaningful parts of her practice.  Before turning fully toward natural dyes, Sydni taught Sculpture, Art History, and Foundations as an Adjunct Professor at Alfred University. She is now the owner and operator of Sydni Gause Silks LLC, teaching workshops throughout North Florida and across the region.
