Botanical Colors is thrilled to present an excursion to Tangier, Morocco this August: EXPERIENCING THE COLORS OF TANGIER workshop and retreat with Yto Barrada & Cara Piazza. Each day will be a mix of creative textile exploration and soaking up the sights and highlights of Tangier. We have gathered short profiles of some of the exciting places we are going to visit during our time in this magical city as well as places that invite exploration and personal discovery.
Tangier is located on the Strait of Gibraltar and sits at the crossroads of Africa and Europe, where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean. Cosmopolitan, multicultural and ancient, Tangier carries the influences of Phoenicians, Romans, Byzantines, the Maghreb (Amazigh) Berber, Arabs, Portuguese, and French. With its vibrant markets, stunning landscapes, and rich heritage, Tangier offers visitors an unforgettable experience. We will encounter the city through the eyes and words of the contemporary artists & craftspeople themselves that are participating in the workshop and retreat and are eager to share with us.
While you are in Tangier, don’t miss these activities and experiences!
Wander Through the Kasbah
Explore the historic Kasbah district, which served as Tangier’s military and political center since the Roman era. You can wander through its labyrinthine streets, marvel at the intricate Moorish architecture, and soak in the panoramic views of the city and the Strait of Gibraltar from the Kasbah’s hilltop vantage points.
Get Lost in the Medina
Lose yourself in the bustling alleyways of Tangier’s Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Discover hidden gems as you navigate through the maze of shops selling everything from spices and textiles to handmade crafts and souvenirs. Don’t forget to bargain for the best deals, it’s expected!
Enjoy a Moroccan Feast
We will indulge your taste buds with the flavors of Moroccan cuisine at one of Tangier’s many restaurants and cafes and at The Mothership with home cooked Moroccan meals. We will savor traditional dishes like tagine (slow-cooked stews), couscous, and pastilla (a savory pie), accompanied by freshly baked bread and mint tea.
Visit The Cinematheque
Yto refurbished and created The Cinematheque du Tanger (CDT) in 2006. It is a cultural institution dedicated to the preservation, exhibition, and promotion of film. It serves as a hub for cinephiles, offering screenings of classic, independent, and international films, as well as hosting film festivals, retrospectives, and other events related to cinema. The Cinematheque plays a crucial role in fostering film culture and appreciation in Tangier and beyond, providing a platform for both established and emerging filmmakers to showcase their work.
Lunch at DARNA

Founded by the incredible Kenza Bennani who returned home in 2015 after working in London for Jimmy Choo. Kenza will be leading us in a traditional Moroccan lace making technique as one of our activities. She believes that tradition is a resource, not a burden. Her timeless traditional motifs are paired down on unisex shapes, with kaleidoscopic prints and beautiful ornamental designs. Her slow fashion label focuses on community and craft first and places a new spin on timeless classics.
