We are delighted to welcome noted shibori artist and designer Debbie Maddy of Tiori Designs for an immersive exploration of sophisticated stitched-resist techniques rarely taught elsewhere. Her thoughtfully layered methods create striking, architectural patterns that will lift your shibori practice into an entirely new realm of nuance and refinement.

Debbie has translated her signature shibori motifs into fabric collections for Moda and has traveled widely, studying with master shibori artists in the UK, US, and Japan, generously distilling years of research into accessible, hands-on learning. In this workshop, she will guide you through two focused stitched-resist designs, including Akiyama Shibori, which she learned from Takayuki Ishii of Awonoyoh—an esteemed shibori master from Fujino, Japan, who taught at Botanical Colors in 2023 and later deepened Debbie’s study during her time in Japan.

The second technique is Hinode Shibori, a stitched-resist design that evokes the rising sun and allows for multiple nuanced variations in a single method. In this workshop, Debbie will guide you through four distinct expressions of the Hinode (Sunrise) pattern, showing how shifts in stitch placement, tension, and binding can transform one core technique into a spectrum of radiating forms. Each variation reveals a different relationship between light and shadow in the cloth, so you leave not only with four unique Sunrise designs, but also with a deeper understanding of how to adapt and evolve this motif in your own practice.

We will be dyeing in large scale all-natural indigo vats with instructions on dipping, rinsing, and unveiling. On the final day, Debbie will cover all the finishing steps for your pieces.

Minimum class size is 11 participants to run this workshop. 

About Debbie

I began my journey with indigo as most people do, in a class folding and clamping the fabrics and dyeing in the indigo. That class was the first of many to learn more and more. I wanted to learn how to stitch and wrap on poles and fold in very unusual ways to get more intricate and unusual designs. I have traveled to Japan twice, England and all over the US taking classes and learning from the masters. It is an ancient art with a very contemporary feel. My favorite thing about learning is sharing with my students. I always enjoy the classes where I can share the many stitching techniques for the unusual designs.
