John Marshall Teaches Printing with Blocks and Stamps

We are thrilled to host our dear friend and natural dye collaborator in a rare in-person appearance and invite you to experience his humor and artistic expertise with Japanese textile and dye techniques. John first apprenticed in traditional Japanese doll-making fresh out of high school and we benefit from his wealth of textile knowledge and techniques and many years in Japan learning from the old masters.

Printing with Blocks and Stamps
June 26, 27, 28 (Thurs-Fri-Sat)
10-5
Botanical Colors
503 S Michigan St, Ste B, Seattle, WA 98108

This course focuses on using 3D relief items to create intricate imagery on silks and cottons. We’ll be using carved wooden blocks, plants, doodahs, and even fish from Pike Place Market to create our fibrous treasures. As with the other class, we’ll be producing our own pigments and extracts to use in the printing process. These will be supplemented with an abundance of natural dyes and pigments from Japan to give us a full pallete of colors to choose from.

Materials needed

The program includes all materials – dyes, pigments, hand made paper, silks, and cottons. It also includes the use of most of the equipment required – stretcher bars, brushes, clamps, daubers, and more.

Please wear comfortable shoes and bring a basic sewing kit of needles, thread, pins, scissors, thimble, if you use one and other basic sewing supplies.  We have plenty of scissors available if you are traveling by air.

John’s famous trunk show

A selection of John’s treasures, natural dyes and books will be available for sale during the workshop. Watch for announcements of this event.

Cancellation Policy

All workshop sales are final. We cannot accommodate changes or refunds to your purchase. If you are unable to attend, you may find a replacement and please notify us if you do so. Thank you for your cooperation!
