We are thrilled to host our dear friend and natural dye collaborator in a special in-person appearance and invite you to experience his humor and artistic expertise with Japanese textile and dye techniques. John first apprenticed in Japan learning traditional Japanese doll-making fresh out of high school and we benefit from his wealth of textile knowledge and techniques and many years in Japan.

Wood Block Printing with Natural Dyes

Ever wonder how to get colorful and reliable results using natural dyes and block printing techniques? John recently brought back kits from Japan to get us started on this three day class, which includes indigo paste and myrobalan  – but wait, that’s not all

In addition to bringing pre-carved blocks to get you started, and supplementing the kit in a broad range of additional natural dyes, John is also bringing all the power tools and safety equipment you’ll need to carve your own blocks! This includes paulownia and other woods grown in John’s garden and cured for the past several years, the tung oil needed to preserve your creations for years of future use, and a broad range of silks, cottons, and ramie upon which to play.

No experience needed – bring your own designs or make use of the large library of imagery John will be sharing. A class webpage will be up and running a month before class with background information, links, answers to questions, and any other information you may need to make this a meaningful and productive experience.

Materials Information

The class fee includes use of power tools and safety equipment and all consumables such as a broad range of prepared textiles, various woods to help you determine your preferences, and a broad range of colorful natural dyes.

• Please wear comfortable clothes you can get dirty and covered shoes, or bring an apron.
• If you have a pair of utility gloves (for handling rough wood), feel free to bring those.
• Bring your lunch and a beverage.
• A notebook and pen

Minimum Enrollment has been met: the workshop is a go, so please make your travel arrangements.

We need 12 participants to hold this workshop.  We will let everyone know as soon as we reach this number so you can make travel plans.

All workshop sales are final. We cannot accommodate changes or refunds to your purchase. If you are unable to attend, you may find a replacement and please notify us if you do so. Thank you for your cooperation!
