Eco-Printing Deep Dive with Monica Medeiros of Brico Press

ONLINE WORKSHOP

The workshop will be recorded and available for 6 months after the workshop date (until April 30, 2026)

Eco-Printing is a bewitching process that uses the natural dye properties of plants to create prints on fabric and paper. In this workshop we will learn the basics and the intricacies of the art of eco-printing. We will begin with an introduction to the two bedrock principles to getting vivid prints: mordants and contact. We will review the tools at hand as well as discuss foraging and sourcing ideal flowers and foliage for eco-printing.

In this workshop we will focus on using both Aluminum Acetate and Ferrous Sulfate and will demonstrate and compare the use of both. Additionally, we will demonstrate different techniques to achieve varied results from photographic prints to looser abstract designs, taking time to admire both. We will show how to lay out designs and patterns on both silk and cotton fibers including how to lay out and prepare garments.

Once our floral designs are on our fibers we will demonstrate the best process for rolling, tying, and heating. We will reveal the pieces, comparing the results from different approaches and discuss our results while going over washing and care.

Workshop Outline:

“You’ve heard of Content, Content, Content, but have you heard of Contact, Contact, Contact!?” Monica will demonstrate laying out our fiber, laying out our flowers, building patterns, folding, rolling, tying. Five different methods and outcomes. They sound like a sushi bar of delight… well sort of…

1. Aluminum Mordant Only – Tight Roll with fresh flowers and leaves (on silk)

2. Aluminum Mordant + Iron Mordant – Tight Roll with fresh flowers and leaves (on silk)

3. Loose Roll (on silk) – Bundle Dyeing

4. Grocery Store Roll (on cotton) – Working with what you have at home, or can find in the form of food wastes and kitchen scraps!

5. Dry Roll (on cotton) – This will demonstrate working with the fabric dry as opposed to wetting before

6. Using a Tannin Blanket

List of Materials for you to procure to do the techniques in this workshop:

– Aluminum Acetate

– Iron powder (ferrous sulfate)

– Fresh and dried flowers from markets or gardens

– Silk, Cotton, Linen, or Wool fibers to dye: Silk pillowcases

– Rubber Mallet

– Copper pipes, wooden dowels or sticks

– Muslin yardage or fabric scraps.

– Heavy duty plastic sheeting

– Cotton string or twine

– Stainless steel pot

– Gram scale

– Tongs

– Thermometer

– 5 gallon bucket

– pH neutral washing soap

About your Instructor:

The word bricolage comes from the French verb, bricoler, which has many translations, the most common being “to tinker.” Truest to its French heritage would be the definition of the constant and ever lasting tinkering on one’s house, and more specifically, fixing something without going to the store to buy exactly what is needed. It is the creative use of what is at hand and implies using unconventional materials to fix problems. Sometimes we have to improvise, and often, the result is more endearing than first planned.

Bricolage Press was founded on these ideas.

Monica Medeiros is an interdisciplinary artist with a deep appreciation for slow craft. She is a firm believer that “everyday is a school day” and studies and practices photography, printmaking, and fiber arts. She graduated with a Bachelors degree in Fine Art from Mills College in Oakland, California. She began teaching craft workshops in 2014, and has since taught throughout the US and internationally. She lives in Vallejo, California with her rescue dogs, Lupita and Pablo.
