Sara Buscaglia Of Farm & Folk Teaches Applique Dream Quilts

February 5-9, 2025 (Wednesday-Sunday)

10AM to 4PM

Botanical Colors

Seattle WA 98108

Sara Buscaglia of wildly popular Farm & Folk has captured our imagination with her beautifully designed quilts and color work using natural dyes that she grows on her farm in Durango, Colorado. Each piece tells a story about her commitment to farming, land stewardship, and the joy and dignity of hand work. We are so pleased to have her return and teach a 5-day quilting workshop in Seattle with us in February 2025! This year’s focus will be on applique to create a quilt approximately 30×30 inches. Applique is a needlework technique where fabric and motifs are stitched onto whole or pieced cloth, allowing the quilter to create beautiful, free and figurative designs on the quilt. Each participant will work with a palette of naturally dyed color created especially for this workshop. Sara will demonstrate several applique methods, guide color choices and motifs. Join us for a wonderful 5-day creative studio session dyeing fabrics, designing colorways and making hand-stitched quilts!

What you receive

  • Each participant receives a palette of 6 naturally dyed, organic quilting cotton fabrics that we have dyed for this workshop and is based on colorways inspired by Sara’s Colorado high desert farm. This is a generous amount of fabric for applique with enough left over for future projects.
  • We supply front and back fabrics and cotton batting.
  • Naturally dyed sashiko threads by Botanical Colors
  • We will dye additional fabrics in the workshop as color accents, including indigo overdyes

What you will learn

  • Sara will demonstrate her methods of applique including needle turn, raw edge and the freezer paper method.
  • Sara will help you design and applique motifs based on patterns and shapes that she uses for her quilts, or create your own!
  • Sara will demonstrate and guide you through expressive hand quilting once your quilt top is completed.

About your teacher Sara Buscaglia:
Sara is an organic farmer, natural dyer, and textile artist residing in the high desert of southwest Colorado. Farm & Folk is an expression of her work as both farmer and artist. A lifelong student and steward of the land, Sara takes inspiration from the paradigm-shifting, slow processes of tending soil, seeds, and plants. Her experience and direct connection to food, natural color, and fiber have deepened her understanding and appreciation of their value, a connection her naturally dyed quilts embody.

Students will actively prepare fabrics, simmer dyestuffs, and dye under Sara’s expert guidance. She will then lead the group through the design process and stitching the quilt. Participants will have access to Botanical Colors’ indigo vats and dye studio for the dye work. Where possible, we will use locally gathered, grown or foraged colors.
