Mordanted Sashiko Thread with Different Tannin Options! Now you have the convenience of using tannins and a pre-mordanted thread to create your own color palettes and who doesn’t love that?

We’ve been busy adding to our very popular mordanted product line, and will be offering mordanted Sashiko threads using three different mordant variables. The light brown color is Cutch, a light brown tannin, the yellow is Sumac, a yellow-based tannin, the light cream is Gallo-Tannin, a “clear” tannin, and the bright white skein is unmordanted and Prepared for Dying (PFD). Each tannin mordant color comes in a 10-skein pack of 40 meters (approx. 44 yards) for each skein.

Having three different mordant options plus an unmordanted variation offers dyers a range of colors to make your own tannin-based rainbow. We recently showed how using Sumac, Madder, and Indigo created a beautiful cotton fabric gradation wonderful for stitching and quilting. Now you can make a similar color gradation with sashiko thread by using the Sumac mordanted thread pack. Of course, you can let your creativity run wild and create other color combinations, too!

Here’s what each tannin-mordanted Sashiko threads look like. This first set of threads are mordanted with Gallo-Tannin.

Gallo Tannin – This sashiko mordant variation will create the clearest colors, with little or no influence on the final dyed colors. This variation is great for creating a classic brightly colored rainbow, similar to what we created with our mordanted hankies, below. Expect clear, bright shades.

Here’s the next variation of tannin-mordanted Sashiko threads. These threads are mordanted with Sumac.

Sumac – This sashiko mordanted variation will create some dreamy blues if you overdye with a light indigo vat, and also a brilliant red-yellow when overdyed with madder extract, plus some dramatic purple shades with indigo and madder. You can achieve this popular sumac gradation with this mordant variation.

Here’s the next variation of tannin-mordanted Sashiko threads. These threads are mordanted with Cutch extract.

Cutch- This sashiko mordanted variation will create some gray-blues with an indigo overdye, and also add a warm base to other colors to create your own gradation. This is the first time we’ve created a tannin color using cutch, but you will achieve a similar palette to our walnut experiments, but cutch is warmer and livelier.

Stay tuned for our product announcement and pre-order of these mordanted threads this Thursday!
