This Mordant Monday we dive into Pokeberry Dye Adv This Mordant Monday we dive into Pokeberry Dye Adventures! (A reprint from our archives )

This is the season for foraging, and we have a vigorous pokeberry bush outside our studio.

Those of you who know me know that I was trained to mordant nearly everything (exception: indigo). Not mordanting something usually elicits a surprised, silent, but oh-so-judgey raised eyebrow but I found that I got better color from pokeberry by not using a mordant and that was puzzling. The interesting thing about pokeberries is that it's possible to get a brilliant color by using wool yarn and white vinegar. No alum mordant is used in this technique. And vinegar is not really considered a mordant. So here we are.

This video is from our dye explorations with the wonderful @sashaduerr while she was teaching her Forage & Dye Fall Color Palette Workshop with us in Seattle!

On this Sunday Visit, we’re honored to sit down On this Sunday Visit, we’re honored to sit down with @HarvestandMill, pioneers in regeneratively grown, U.S.-made organic clothing whose work invites us to slow down and recalibrate our relationship with the land and our wardrobes. As ever, we approach this dialogue in reverence for our continued collaboration—one that roots deeply in shared values of local making, true sustainability, and a belief that changing fashion means changing systems, stitch by stitch.

Their story is one of vision, resilience, and interconnectedness, unraveling the quiet strength behind ethical practice and homegrown materials. Today, we listen and learn from a team shaping the future of textiles not only through innovative fibers and dyes but by nurturing the communities and ecosystems that support their work.

ONLINE WORKSHOP
10am PST – 12:30pm PST / 1pm EST – 3:30 EST

Eco-Printing is a bewitching process that uses the natural dye properties of plants to create prints on fabric and paper. In this workshop we will learn the basics and the intricacies of the art of eco-printing. We will begin with an introduction to the two bedrock principles to getting vivid prints: mordants and contact. We will review the tools at hand as well as discuss foraging and sourcing ideal flowers and foliage for eco-printing.
In this workshop we will focus on using both Aluminum Acetate and Ferrous Sulfate and will demonstrate and compare the use of both. Additionally, we will demonstrate different techniques to achieve varied results from photographic prints to looser abstract designs, taking time to admire both. We will show how to lay out designs and patterns on both silk and cotton fibers including how to lay out and prepare garments.
Once our floral designs are on our fibers we will demonstrate the best process for rolling, tying, and heating. We will reveal the pieces, comparing the results from different approaches and discuss our results while going over washing and care.
