Hibiscus Roselle

We’re pleased to offer Hibiscus Roselle, a flower dye that’s perfect for fun projects with children.  Hibiscus is the tangy red flower ingredient in Red Zinger tea and makes a beautiful color.  It is sensitive to pH changes and direct sunlight so it’s probably not the best for heirloom projects but it’s an economical wash of pink, purple and red for afternoon paint parties. Our Hibiscus Roselle comes from the gleanings and final harvest for a Texas-based herb company and would otherwise be left behind or composted.  We’re offering it to you in a generous size for a play-time color!

Marigold Mix

Marigold Mix

We are especially pleased at how well marigold mix dyes cellulose fibers. So it’s a great way to create that sunny yellow on cotton and linen. (Kamala extract  works best with animal fibers and silk.) For details on how to use marigold mix, please see our page on natural dye extracts. Marigolds are native to Central America but are used as temple flowers in India and used lavishly during the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) when Mexican families celebrate their departed loved ones. Elaborate altars and memorials are festooned with flowers, special sweets and remembrances of family … Read more

Aquarelle Madder Liquid

Historically, madder is one of the oldest natural dyes. People grew madder since 1500 BC in Central Asia and the Middle East. The red color comes from the root of the plant. For details on how to dye with liquid madder, please visit our page on liquid dyes. Each Aquarelle liquid natural … Read more

Annatto Seed Powder (Bixa orellana)

Annatto Seed Powder (Bixa orellana) is a waxy, tropical seed that is used as a spice, medicine and a food and textile dye.  It’s also called achiote, roucou and lipstick tree. Annatto is soluble in both water and oil, and it is widely used as a colorant for cosmetics and foods, such as Velveeta processed cheese, Cheetos and Goldfish crackers. Hmmm. Iron( ferrous sulfate)

Iron (ferrous sulfate)

We use iron (ferrous sulfate) as a color changer, darkening or “saddening” natural dyes on protein or cellulose fibers. It also increases lightfastness and acts as a mineral mordant for dark shades. The famous black dye recipes from the 17th and 18th century use generous amounts of iron and tannin. Iron reacts with the tannin in many dyestuffs creating colors ranging from chartreuse green to black, depending on the dye it is combined with. Our iron powder is light green and food grade. Use it either during mordanting or in a post-dye bath. Too much iron can harshen the hand … Read more
