Here’s another fabric treasure: handwoven hemp-cotton spot weave fabric. Spot weave is a geometric weave structure that shows off the handspun hemp yarns as they float over the surface of the fabric. Some of these structures resemble Summer and Winter as well. These beautiful, skillfully woven fabrics are perfect for tabletop runners or mats with pleasing neutral combinations of cream, ecru and light taupe colored yarn. All of the hemp in this fabric is grown without pesticides and processed, spun and woven by hand. The cotton yarns are most likely mill spun commercial cotton. The fabric dates from the 1940s to the 1970s and the fabric dyes beautifully.

This fabric would be fantastic for a table runner, placemats, or for cushion covers. This fabric is one of a kind and unused from vintage stock. It may have minor weaving imperfections, small holes, marks and mends, shades or stains or other signs of long storage.  The fabric may be used on either side – one side is the weaving reverse of the other, which adds to its interest!

Fabric descriptions

Roll 1: 15.5 inches wide hemp spot weave – this fabric looks a bit like an early American overshot coverlet pattern but it’s tone on tone with hemp and cotton.  It’s the ideal width for a table runner or placemats.  Sold by the yard.

Roll 2: 19″ wide hemp spot weave – this fabric has beautiful “honeycomb”-like cells, but I don’t think it’s a true honeycomb structure.  Again, the floats are dramatic on one side and more subtle on the other.

Roll 3: 15.5 inches wide spot weave – this fabric has a rectangular grid filled with short weft floats and is a favorite.  It’s perfect as a table runner – very elegant!
