Organic Indigo – (Indigofera tinctoria) – Our indigo extract is Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified, finely powdered and yields a very rich and dark blue. Our indigo is 45-48% indigotin which is 2 to 3 times stronger than other indigo on the market so you produce deep colors with fewer dips. The indigo is very pure and potent and is grown and harvested by small producers. Each purchase of this indigo helps support small scale agriculture and women’s groups. Instructions included.
For those who wish to make an indigo vat without strong chemicals, check out our blog post on how to create a natural indigo vat using fructose powder (fruit sugar) and pickling lime (calcium hydroxide).
Note: For a standard “chemical” indigo vat you will need to obtain a small amount of sodium hydroxide (household lye) to make your indigo stock solution. This can be purchased at a local hardware store or online from Amazon.com, soap-making or bio-diesel suppliers. You may also want to purchase sodium hydrosulfite, soda ash and hide glue for your indigo vat. Sodium hydrosulfite or hydros is a reducing agent that works in all temperatures of indigo vats. It must be shipped via ground such as UPS Ground or USPS Parcel Post. Soda ash modifies the pH of the indigo dye bath and hide glue helps protect wool and silk from the harshness of the alkaline vat.
- 50 grams of Indigo extract will dye about 900 grams of fiber (2 pounds) to a dark shade
