Gravity Ice Dyeing: A New Ice Dye Surface Design
In this class, Cara demonstrates a NEW Ice Dyeing technique called gravity dyeing. She will show you how to get this arctic dripping pattern on a T-shirt, a yard of silk charmeuse and one of our mordanted cotton bandanas. She will also show you how to trap exhausted dye baths in ice cube trays of various sizes to make sculptural swirling patterns. Once you learn this technique the options are endless on the items you can dye at home. Our pre-mordanted items are great for this technique so you can simply buy them & dye them along with Cara’s class.
She will also cover how to use pH modifiers to shift the colors of your natural dyes. You will also receive a resource packet and written instructions with your class that have links to tools and different materials needed across the globe for your projects. It will have detailed mordanting instructions and also cover the basics of ice dyeing.
Materials: The download document has a list of materials and procedures to prepare for the workshop. Note: If you purchased the Botanical Colors Beginner Dye Kit, you have nearly all that you need to take this workshop!!
Cosmic Nebula: Otherworldly Surface Design for Cotton, Hemp & Silk
Learn how to create dramatic cosmic night sky patterns on natural fibers in this fun informative natural dye class. The effect is easy and eye-catching and is perfect for scarves, a t-shirt for your Goth astrophysicist cousin or anyone who loves to play with impressive natural dye alchemy.
Cara will first lead a demonstration on working with a variety of tannins to create shades of rich black on cotton, silk & hemp. Once these colors are dyed, she will demonstrate her signature dynamic style to create patterns resembling the night sky. She will work with auxiliaries to shift pH and demonstrate how to discharge color and set the fabrics to make swirling patterns. This is a great technique for tea towels, covering stains and up-cycling garments! Cara will demonstrate on our Handwoven Hemp Cotton Towel Irregulars, one of our mordanted cotton bandanas, a yard of silk charmeuse, a T-shirt AND a pair of organic cotton socks.
No previous natural dye knowledge necessary, all levels of experience are welcome.
Back To Black – Tannin Blacks
Have you been interested in learning how to experiment with tannins to make tannin blacks and unlock the elusive secrets to make charcoal, deep black and silvery gray? How about learning the path to create the inkiest navy blues? These exciting colors are the unlikely combination of rather tame neutral shades called tannins that are found in many plants. On their own they make tan, beige, sometimes brown or other quiet hues, but when combined with other ingredients like indigo or iron, they really show off! Calm, understated cream shades explode into purple and black with the simple addition of iron. It’s dramatic!
In BACK TO BLACK – Tannin Blacks with Cara Marie Piazza, we will create a series of blacks on both cellulose (plant) and protein (animal) fibers. We will cover fiber preparation and mordants along with best practices to achieve beautiful, dark neutral shades. This is a wonderful way to learn how to make a variety of black hues for larger projects and create a swatch library of different blacks, deep navy shades, charcoals and grays.
