Kyoukechi – Complex Clamp Resist

Have you ever tried your hand at itajime clamp resist? It’s a great way to create bold, kaleidoscopic imagery using indigo. Kyoukechi takes it one step further and adds to that the ability to incorporate a limitless range of colors with just one clamping. Voila! You have the ancient art of kyoukechi! Much like standard clamp resist, fabric is folded back and forth between stacking layers of boards. However, in kyoukechi, these shapes are quite complex, and the colors controlled through repeated dippings in combination with corking and uncorking defined areas. The real magic is revealed when unfolding the finished product of rainbow colors.

Sets of pierced wood panels will be supplied, but we won’t be stopping there! Each participant with have the opportunity to carve their own sets using their original designs or making use of the broad range of imagery John will have prepared for you ahead of time. You’ll have the opportunity to use both power tools to pierce wood panels, as well as the chance to use pre-cut elements to laminate and build up surface relief blocks. A class web page will be up and running a month before class with background information, links, answers to questions, and any other information you may need to make this a meaningful and productive experience.

This includes the use of power tools and protective gear, prepared wood panels ready to work, a range of natural dyepots, a range of silk and prepared cottons, and all other consumables required. You’ll only need to bring an apron and your own note-taking supplies.
