We are excited to welcome artist Jody Alexander back to Seattle for an extended 4-day in-person workshop this summer.
The Studio Coat is a storytelling garment that you dye, stencil and hand stitch in a 4-day session with artist Jody Alexander. It is meant to be worn, modified, mended, further embellished and loved as a favorite piece for years to come. Consider it as a layer that travels with you on unexpected adventures, stylish dog walks, and trips to your favorite bookstore.
The Studio Coat is one of Jody’s signature styles and is based on old Japanese farmer’s coats, or noragi, with a few incorporated Western attributes. It is a patternless garment, elegant, practical and beautiful.
In this workshop students will examine noragi from the instructor’s collection for inspiration, and then cut out and hand stitch their own Studio Coat. The sizing is very generous and there will be three muslin samples (S, M, L) for students to try on to choose their size.
Noragi are constructed in a very simple manner and were worn for years and repeatedly repaired. We will be embracing the joy of slow stitching in this workshop, and while students’ stitching does not need to be neat and tidy, students must be comfortable with hand stitching. The end product is intended to be a special garment that will be a perpetual work in progress to be worked on, mended, and added to as it is worn and loved for years to come.
The workshop consists of in-studio practice where you will work on the noragi and includes stencil printing, natural dyeing and time for stitching. Students will be working with Botanical Colors indigo-dyed fabrics, with other natural dye colors for trim, pockets and other vintage textiles from Kathy’s stash. Since we are holding this workshop in the summer, we will also dye with kakishibu persimmon tannin to create patches, talismans and embellishments. These fabrics will be dyed in class. To make this workshop extra special, we are also planning an excursion to visit the Kubota Garden for inspiration.
