This week on FEEDBACK FRIDAY we had Nienke Hoogvliet talking about our new favorite topic: seaweed dye. Studio Nienke Hoogvliet, is a design studio for material research, experimental and conceptual design. The studio engages in freelance projects for different companies and institutions but also continues research in self-initiated design projects. The studio is based in The Hague, The Netherlands. We are pretty obsessed with their seaweed dye research.

The studio consists of the founder Nienke Hoogvliet and Tim Jongerius. Nienke graduated from Lifestyle & Design at the Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam. Tim graduated from the faculty of Architecture at the TU Delft.
Since the studio was founded in 2013 they have a main focus on materials that can contribute to a more holistic world. The projects raise awareness of social and environmental problems in the textile, leather and food industry. By creating innovative alternatives they hope to change perspectives and systems.
Nienke grew up near the beach, her connection to the ocean was the foundation of the research into seaweed dye and fish skin. In the project SEA ME the studio researches how seaweed can contribute to a more sustainable textile industry. Although the research is ongoing, the findings were published in the books ‘Seaweed Research’ and ‘Fish Leather’.
After the presentation, we had another post-FEEDBACK FRIDAY 1/2 hour event for our month-long celebration of #indigojuly. Our good friend Liz Spencer of The Dogwood Dyer answered all your indigo questions!
NEXT WEEK! Join us July 30th, 9am Pacific, 12pm Eastern for a live Zoom FEEDBACK FRIDAY with Botanical Colors president Kathy Hattori to talk all thing Ceriops!
