Black Hollyhock

PRE-ORDER – Available 6/6/24. We’ve unearthed our stash of Black Hollyhock blossoms and are eager to kick off some summer dyeing projects. Black hollyhock is a bit of a grandstander – all beautiful and lush and deeply pigmented blossoms that can be fragile in terms of wash and lightfastness. And for the color? It’s like a grand science experiment as well as somewhat unpredictable whether you will achieve a purple, a blue, a gray or a green. However, they are all lovely colors and it’s always a virtuous exercise in learning how to let go a bit as the color … Read more

Aluminum Acetate

Aluminum Acetate

Aluminum acetate is a purified mordant powder that creates bright colors on plant fibers. It is an alternative mordant to traditional tannins. Mordanting is an important step in natural dyeing as it helps improve light and washfastness. Its purpose is to provide a bond between the fiber and the dye molecule. Without a mordant bond, natural dye colors will fade, change color and wash out. Detailed instructions on working with aluminum acetate are available here. We recommend using either calcium carbonate (chalk) or wheat bran with aluminum acetate. Please note that this is a very powdery product. It wafts easily and … Read more

Colours From Nature

Colours from Nature

From Kathy: Jenny Dean is one of the very knowledgeable dyers from whom I first learned natural dyeing. With over 40 years of natural dye experience, she is a trove of information and practical application. I inhaled the first edition of her Colours from Nature. And later, Wild Color (written with Karen Diadick Casselman). In addition, I am an avid reader of her blog. We are so excited to offer Colours from Nature! This edition is a second edition, which is an expanded reprint of her classic practical handbook for dyers. It is spiral bound with protective acetate covers. In … Read more

Lac Extract

Lac Extract

Lac (Laccifer lacca) extract comes from a scale insect known from antiquity throughout India, Southeast Asia, Nepal and China. The deep red colorant is extracted from a hard resinous crude shellac before it can be successfully used as a dye. So the resin is known as shellac. It is used for lacquer and in addition as a protective covering for wood. Lac dye was used to color silk and dye leather and was mentioned as early as 250 AD. Lac extract is an affordable alternative to obtain pinks, purples and burgundy reds on protein fibers using an alum mordant. However, … Read more

Wattle Extract

Wattle Extract

Wattle is a member of the Acacia family. People use it extensively in leather tanning as it works very well for even coverage and penetration of skins and pelts for tanning. Australia, South Africa and India grow most wattle. They most commonly extract the Black Wattle to create the dye. Natural dyers use wattle extract as one of the rich tannins to create iron-based grays and blacks or to overdye with indigo to create interesting muted greens. The color is a beige with a pink cast. Additionally, it has a characteristic toasty wood smell. For more information on how to … Read more

Roots, Pods & Flowers of Japan

Our connection to Japan runs deep and although I have been surrounded by Japanese textiles all my life, I was not familiar with many of the traditional colors other than indigo, kakishibu (persimmon tannin) and safflower.  This kit is a personal discovery into the fascinating world of kusaki-zome, or plant dyes that are used in Japan.  Some are of ancient origin, some crossover into herbal medicine and others are a surprise in the dye pot.  So it’s with a lot of pride that we offer a sampler of Japanese traditional dyes plus mordanted silk hankies and a scarf so you … Read more
